On August 31, 2024, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Panjim hosted a highly engaging Mock Parliamentary Debate, graced by Chief Guest Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira, an esteemed legal professional, along with Rev. Fr. Tamatur Cardoso, the Principal, and Rev. Fr. Jacinto Dias, the Administrator. The event was designed to provide students with a practical understanding of the Indian parliamentary system, while fostering critical awareness of key national issues and the democratic process.
The primary objective of the debate was to develop students’ critical thinking and debating skills by simulating real-life parliamentary discussions. Through an examination of contemporary social and political issues, the event aimed to instill a sense of civic responsibility and social consciousness in the participants, encouraging them to engage thoughtfully with the challenges that shape the future of our nation
The debate saw the Standard XI Arts students form the Opposition team, while the Standard XII students represented the ruling party, or Proposition team. Both teams engaged in a spirited exchange of ideas, with compelling arguments on pressing national concerns. After a keenly contested debate, the Opposition team students of Standard XI emerged as the winners, demonstrating a strong ability to present well reasoned and well-articulated points.
In recognition of individual excellence, Mast. Vedanta Verma from Standard XI Commerce A was awarded Best Orator for his outstanding performance-in the Opposition team, while Mr. Lucius De Almeida from Standard XII Commerce B was named the Best Orator from the Proposition team. Their eloquence and command over the burning social issues were lauded by the judges.The Speaker for the debate was Tr. Bianca Fernandes, ensuring that the event was conducted with decorum and adherence to parliamentary protocols. Ms. Nidhi Lepaxy, as the compere, seamlessly guided the proceedings.This year's debate, with the theme “Truth Alone Triumphs,†highlighted the importance of truth, honesty, and integrity in our democratic system, reinforcing the core values that sustain our democracy.
