Empowering Educators Through the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom

QUICK BITE -

On the 6th of August 2025, a staff development session titled “Empowering Educators Through the use of Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom” was organized by the Commerce Faculty, for the teaching and non-teaching staff of the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School. The session took place in the Std. XI Arts classroom and commenced at 11:15 a.m.

The session aimed to introduce educators to the practical use of Artificial Intelligence in the classrooms by equipping and guiding them on how to integrate it in their teaching practices and thus adapt to the demands of modern day and technologically smarter classroom environments.

The session began with a warm welcome and address by Tr. Kimberly Soares. She underlined the importance of continual growth, innovation, and adaptability in the teaching profession. She stressed on the evolving role of educators—not just as transmitters of knowledge but as “‘lifelong learners who must constantly assess and enhance the ways to impact students’ lives.”
Tr. Kimberly spoke about how Artificial Intelligence is not here to replace teachers, but rather to support and strengthen the work they already do. She encouraged everyone to stay open to the many ways AI can be used in the classroom — not as a threat, but as a helpful tool that can make a positive difference in both teaching and learning.

The resource person for the session, Mr. Prashant B. Missal, Founder and CEO of Habits 365 Club, was then introduced, by briefly highlighting his extensive contributions to teacher training and educational innovation. Tr. Kimberly shared that Mr. Missal has conducted over 1,000 teacher upskilling sessions across Goa, many of them under the Goa Samagra Shiksha initiative. With three years of teaching experience as an Assistant Professor, including at Don Bosco College of Engineering and a national accreditation, Tr. Kimberly acknowledged the wide range of workshops Mr. Missal has to his credit – focusing on life skills, time management, and the effective use of AI tools in classrooms.

Following the introduction, Tr. Dhanashri was invited to formally welcome Mr. Prashant Missal with a floral bouquet, as a token of appreciation and respect on behalf of the staff.

Mr. Missal began his session by warmly thanking Rev. Fr. Principal, Tamatur Cardozo and the school management for the opportunity to address the staff. He shared how the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education gained momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, when teachers and students were pushed to adapt quickly to technology. He explained that in today’s world, it is important for teachers to be smart and adaptive in the way they plan and deliver lessons, and to understand that AI can be used to support and simplify their work.

To get the teachers thinking, Mr. Missal started with a short brainstorming activity, asking them what the word “intelligence” meant to them. He then explained that AI should not be seen as a replacement for teachers, but rather as a helpful “assistant or partner in education”. He narrated a real-life situation, stating how he once had to prepare a proposal urgently and used an LLM (Large Language Model) like ChatGPT with the right prompts to get it done quickly. He gave a live situational demonstration by motivating and guiding teachers to frame effective prompts, how to edit them, and how to get accurate results that match the teacher’s need. All the teachers displayed a keen interest by participating in this activity.

He explained a simple four-step method to write good prompts:
1. Assign a role,
2. Give a task,
3. Mention the context, and
4. Decide the format in which the answer is needed.

He guided and briefed the audience on how to use tools like ChatGPT for writing and brainstorming, Gemini for analysis, and Perplexity for getting fact-based answers. To make the session even more relevant, he demonstrated how teachers can integrate Google Drive with AI tools. Using a real-world Accountancy subject document, he showed how a file can be downloaded from Google Drive and then uploaded into LLM - Gemini, which could summarize the content or even solve a problem based on what the file contains.

He also introduced the concept of"Deep Thinking" within ChatGPT — a feature especially helpful for those engaged in research, thesis work, or Ph.D. level projects. This demonstrated the wide ranging usefulness of AI tools not just for classroom teaching, but also for academic writing, analysis, and higher-order learning.

Toward the end, Mr. Missal spoke about how he uses AI and technology in his own life, especially for managing his Habits 365 Club at the state level. He demonstrated screen sharing, linking Gemini with Google Assistant, and how everything can be managed efficiently through cloud storage. He wrapped up the session by revising the key points with the teachers and encouraging them to reflect on what they had learned.

The session was interactive, with teachers having put forth subject specific queries. Tr. Dhanashri, the Hindi Tr., requested Mr. Missal to demonstrate the use of AI for Std. XII target topics using language specific prompts. Tr. Jenifer requested for a PPT be drafted using AI on the topic of photosynthesis.

Mr. Missal ended by reminding teachers that in today’s fast-changing world, they must go beyond just the chalkboard and embrace modern tools to stay relevant and effective in their role as “facilitators of learning.”

The session, which was originally scheduled to end earlier, extended till 01:00 p.m. owing to the genuine interest and active involvement of the staff. Teachers remained fully engaged, expressing curiosity — an indication of how well the session resonated with the group.

To close the session, Sir Rajesh Kalangutkar expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the faculty and management. He described the session as a “thoughtful exercise” and acknowledged how meaningfully the Mr. Missal had connected with the teachers, keeping their attention sustained for an extended duration. He commended Mr. Prashant Missal for engaging a session that was not only informative but also practically relevant and engaging.

As a token of appreciation, Tr. Cheryl was invited to present a memento to Mr. Missal.

The session gave the staff useful ideas and insights into mastering the art of using AI to empower themselves as the anchors to enhancing and upgrading the teaching – learning environment. It was well-received by all, and especially beneficial to those who were only beginning to explore the possibilities that technology offers in education.
