On 24th June 2025, the Promote Value Club of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Panaji, organised a Copel Making Competition on the theme “Crown of Excellence: Blooming with Knowledge and Character”.
The primary objective of this event was to revive the Catholic tradition of the Sao João festival, while also encouraging students to explore their creativity and craftsmanship through the design of unique, eco-friendly Copels that reflect the spirit of nature, festivity, and Goan culture. The competition was open to all students and required individual participation. Students were instructed to prepare their Coples at home using natural materials such as flowers, fruits, leaves, and twigs, and bring them to school on the day of the event. The day began with a short assembly at 8:00 a.m., where Seeya and Samiya from XI Commerce A spoke on the significance of the Sao João festival, followed by Anuj Naik from XI Arts who shared insights into the teachings of Saint John the Baptist.
A lively performance of the Goan song “Goycho Sao João” by Arts stream students added to the festive spirit. More than 100 students submitted their beautifully crafted Copels , which were then displayed along the corridor, accompanied by traditional festive sweets and fruits. During recess, a vibrant student parade was held with groups singing “Goycho Sao João” and “Feel the Sao João,” capturing the joyful atmosphere of the festival. The competition was judged by Mr. Salvin, Tr. Maria, and Tr. Jennifer based on creativity, originality, theme relevance, eco-friendliness, and neatness. After thorough evaluation, Mr. Jonathan Rodriguez from XI Commerce B won the First Prize, while Ms. Ranisha Gonsalves, also from XI Commerce B, secured the Second Prize.
The event concluded with a meaningful speech by Simran Bhosale (XI Commerce B) and Anuj Naik (XI Arts) on the cultural and spiritual importance of Sao João. The Copel Making Competition proved to be a great success, receiving enthusiastic feedback from students and teachers alike. It not only fostered creativity and individual expression but also instilled a deeper appreciation for Goan traditions and environmental values among the students.
